-----------------------------------------
The Fillmore is the hearth where the earliest sparks of 1960s countercultural music grew into flames. Starting with a benefit concert for the San Francisco Mime Troupe, legendary promoter Bill Graham played host to every significant rock act of the 1960s and early 1970s, including the Who, the Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Traffic and countless others. When it first opened in the 1930s the Fillmore was a dance hall. The club later became a roller rink before finally evolving into a music venue. In the early 1950s, some of the biggest names in rhythm and blues played the Fillmore, including James Brown, Bobby "Blue" Bland and Ike & Tina Turner. It is best known, however, as the land where hippiedom began.
