Historic Rock and Roll Clubs---5. The Cavern

Location: Liverpool, England
Famous Bands to Grace the Stage: The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers
-----------------------------------------
In the early 1960s England was bowled over by a new kind of pop music that combined the rhythm and blues of American radio with the "skiffle" sound of the English folk scene. This new music grew out of the pubs of the gray, industrial coastal towns of England, especially Liverpool. Called "Merseybeat," its most fervent practitioners could be heard wailing away in a subterranean vault called the Cavern. Here is where long hair, electric guitars and infectious melodies grew into a global pop phenomenon. Though closed from 1973 to 1984, the Cavern remained at 10 Mathew Street for 40 years. The club was knocked down in 1982, but the original bricks were preserved and used in the rebuilding of the Cavern which stands on the same site today.
